October 6, 1944

Veterans and their families along with all interested parties are invited to attend a meeting at the courthouse, Monday, Oct. 16. The purpose of this meeting is to hear explained the workings of the G.I. Bill of Rights. A representative of the State Selective Service Commission was in Philadelphia this week and made arrangements for the meetings.

County Chairman Pete DeWeese of the War Fund Drive announced yesterday the appointment of Felton Grubbs and Marshal Prince as co-chairman for the city of Philadelphia to assist him in raising the quota for Philadelphia for the war fund. 

              

October 7, 1954

The big, new lighted scoreboard at Harpole Field will be used for the first time Friday night when Philadelphia plays Canton. Both teams are undefeated so far this season, and the high school stadium is expected to be taxed to capacity.

Mrs. Nelson Dallas was hostess to October Philadelphia Home Demonstration Club with nine members and Mrs. Truman Salter and Mrs. frank Farrow, visitors.  

October 8, 1964

Miss Gail Dunnigan, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Dunnigan of the Longino community, was named one of three winners in the Southeast District contest for Queen of the Farm Bureau at Ellisville Tuesday night of this week.

Arnold DeWeese today announced his candidacy for re-election as District Two member of the Neshoba County school board

The East Central Junior College Alumni Association has elected Neshoba County Chancery Clerk Beth Darby as its 1974 Alumnus of the Year, announced John Risher, president of the association. 

October 10, 1984

The Neshoba County Welfare Department announced today that the United States Department of Agriculture surplus commodities, including cheese, butter and rice will be distributed to eligible area residents Oct. 26, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the National Guard Armory.

"Now Appearing on Broadway" will be the theme for the annual Neshoba County Junior Miss program, sponsored by LaSertoma Ladies League. 

      October 6, 2004

The Philadelphia HIstoric Preservation Commission held a question-and-answer session last week to inform residents about preliminary plans to set up a new historic districts in the city. The eight member committee is currently working on a proposal that, if approved, would designate a large portion of the downtown area and some neighborhoods north of the square as historic districts. 

             

October 8, 2014

A new 3,000-square-foot convenience store is under construction at the intersection of Byrd and Pecan avenues in the Historic District. The work is being done by Commercial Construction and Maintenance of Hoover, Ala. The store is owned by Sonny Bedi.
