November 19, 1943

Members of Philadelphia Post No. 138 of the American Legion cheered loudly at their Armistice celebration at the Hut last Thursday evening as Commander T.J. Mayo held the note representing the final indebtedness on the Hut and set fire to it. The final note was paid several days ago, and the attractive Hut is now free of indebtedness.

              

November 19, 1953

The second county-wide Community Development program was a success in the number of communities participating, in the attendance at the rally held Tuesday, and the large number of individuals completing the year's work and making reports. Over 500 people jammed the American Legion Hut for the annual stew and two and one half hour program.

     November 21, 1963    

TVA recently placed in service a new primary substation at Philadelphia, Miss., which operates at 161,000 volts and will provide 40,000 kva of transformer capacity to serve a wide area in Mississippi.

November 22, 1973

City officials today announced that, in an effort to comply with President Nixon's request to conserve energy, that Christmas decorations in the business district will not be lighted except on the court square and then only for limited hours.

November 23, 1983

Robert Thomas has been elected to serve as president of the Philadelphia-Neshoba County Chamber of Commerce for 1984. Carolyn Dearman will serve as vice president and Lillian Killen as treasurer.

November 24, 1993 

The IRS is trying to give more than $211,000 back to Mississippians who paid too much in federal income taxes. The post office has sent 472 checks back to the IRS marked "undeliverable," according to the IRS.

The Rev. Ron Reiser, director of the Mississippi Teen Challenge Girls Center, was in Philadelphia this week to conduct revival services at First Assembly of God Church and to spread the news about his organization.

      

November 19, 2003

Neshoba County's unemployment rate dropped seven tenths of a percentage point in September to a record low, figures released by the Mississippi Employment Security Commission show. The county's jobless rate was at 3.1 percent.

A second National Guard unit from Philadelphia received mobilization orders Wednesday for eventual overseas deployment while members of the 367th Maintenance Company have arrived in Kuwait.

Doyle Wolverton, who coached girls basketball at Leake Academy for 39 years, said his abrupt resignation on Monday was "for the betterment of the school and all parties involved," thanking players past and present.
