November 5, 1943
Mayor W.M. Prince of this city today issues a proclamation calling upon all citizens of Philadelphia and the area surrounding to join in the observance of the 168th birthday of the U.S. Marine Corps, which is being celebrated with dignity and feeling throughout the world.
Neshoba County has not yet reached its quota in the National War Fund drive now in progress, but if all committees will work hard, and if citizens will respond with reasonableness, the quota will be reached by Saturday night, Pete DeWeese, county chairman, predicted Wednesday.

Four Mississippi county agents will be presented certificates for the Distinguished Service Award of the National Association of County Agricultural Agents, today in Jackson during the annual meeting of Mississippi county agents and home demonstration agents.
The County Teachers Association will have Mrs. Nell Wilcoxen, of Phoenix, Arizona, National Classroom Teacher president speak to them at their Nov. 12th meeting. The assembly will be in the Philadelphia High School auditorium, and the starting hour is 7:00 o'clock.

Philadelphia merchants are busy getting merchandise ready for Philadelphia Dollar Days Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Bargains are in store for those who will shop early. This should come at a time when the customers are in need of merchandise, after the long summer, the harvest and before the holidays.

The Special Milk Program for lunch rooms of the Philadelphia City Schools will be reinstated for the 1973-74 school session on Monday, Nov. 12th, in accordance with a recent bulletin from the State Department of Education. The cost of the special milk to the student will be five cents for both white and chocolate milk.

A Reagan administration official with the Department of Health and Human Services awarded three grants totaling $783,110 to the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indian during a visit here. Dorcas Hardy, assistant secretary for Human Development Services, made the presentation to Choctaw Chief Phillip Martin at the conclusion of a visit here.

A record crowd welcomed country music star Marty Stuart "back home" Monday night during the annual Philadelphia-Neshoba County Chamber of commerce banquet. The Philadelphia native, guest speaker at the 40th annual event, talked about growing up in Philadelphia, his 21-year career in the music business and his plans to build a house at Arlington.

County employees were granted a 50-cents-an-hour cost-of-living raise in September and that was modified Monday to include employees still under their six-month probationary period. All total, the raises will cost the county up to $75,000, depending on a number of factors, including overtime worked.

The Greg Smith Memorial Weight Room at Philadelphia High School moved closer to reality last week with a major donation presented to the Athletic Booster Club. Before a crowded stadium during halftime of Friday nights' football game, Philadelphia Shelter Insurance agent Danny Howell presented a check for $16,130 to the Booster Club for the memorial.
