October 1, 1943

Jimmy Oglesby, 13-year-old boy who resides on Route 1, Noxapater, killed a 5-foot rattlesnake this week on the farm of C. C. Price. The big rattler had 16 rattlers, but did not deter Jimmy from killing it with a stick.

After many brilliant and heroic exploits in combat areas of the war, First Lieut. Hoover Edwards, son of Mr. and Mrs. B.F. Edwards, of the Arlington community, was reported missing in action. His parents received a telegram from the War Department on Sept. 12, stating that Lieut. Edwards had been missing since Sept. 3.

              

October 1, 1953

The Central Electric Power association this week along with the dealers of the city are announcing in the columns of this paper that Free Range Installation will be given to all who buy a range during the month of October. 

According to a "prohibition law violation sheet" issued here Wednesday by the sheriff's office, Neshoba County's chief law enforcement officer, Sheriff Madison Spears has been a very busy man. Information given for publication reveals that 14 liquor raids have been conducted during the past few weeks.

       October 3, 1963    

Mississippi Democrats will rally in every courthouse in every county in Mississippi on Tuesday evening, October 8th, to organize their forces for all Mississippi Democratic nominees who names appear on the November 5th general election ballot.

Robert R. Barrett, Neshoba County ASC committee chairman for the past nine years, retired from that post on October 1. Mr. Barrett's retirement was the result of a recent ruling by the U.S. Department of Agriculture which prohibits the election of a farmer to the ASC County Committee who has reached the age of 70 years. 

October 4, 1973

Members of the Philadelphia Business and Professional Women's Club recently honored Miss Yvonne Hickman by naming her recipient of the 1973 Woman of Achievement Award. 

October 5, 1983

Dayna Williamson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Sam Williamson of Philadelphia, will be crowned East Central Junior College homecoming queen during homecoming activities on campus on Oct. 15. The queen and her court will be presented during halftime of the East Central and Hinds game.

October 6, 1993 

The Neshoba County Board of Supervisors took steps Monday for the construction of a new jail and juvenile detention facility. Construction of the new $1.5 million complex will begin as soon as preliminary plans and specifications are finalized and approved by the board. 

      

October 1, 2003

The first peek at plans for a proposed bypass around Philadelphia could come as early as next month, a state Department of Transportation consultant said. State officials have been studying traffic patterns for the past several months to determine the best possible route options with the least impact on the environment.

             

October 2, 2013

A longtime Philadelphia businessman and community leader has been named Philadelphia and Neshoba Coutny's Citizen of the Year for 2013. Steve Wilkerson, owner of Steve's on the Square, will receive the award on Monday, October 14 during the annual banquet of the Community Development Partnership.
