The Philadelphia Paint & Glass Company is the latest enterprise to embark on the journey of business here in Philadelphia and will, it is predicted, be of no little benefit as an exclusive store of its kind. Mr. Horace Turner is the owner.

Members of the First Presbyterian church here held a Congregational meeting last Sunday morning at the church and voted to call a new pastor. The pastor to whom the call was extended is Rev. James Vinton Cobb, of Forest City, Arkansas.

              

September 24, 1953

All is in readiness for the gala Homecoming Celebration to be staged here tomorrow (Friday) afternoon in honor of Cpl. James D. Spears and Sgt. John T. Harbour, Jr., two recently repatriated Korean prisoners of war.

Miss Mary Lampley, heading the Tuberculosis Seal Sale this year under the sponsorship of the B&PW Club with Mrs. Alex Daws and Mrs. Harold Moss attended the District meeting held in Meridian last Wednesday. The seal sale which begins Nov. 16th and continues through December will secure funds for the tuberculosis preventation and control activities of the local association.

On the eve of the Sunflower Food Stores 16th anniversary celebration, announcement is made of the selection of Morris Lewis, Jr., Indianola, Miss., as president-elect of NAWGA, the National-American Wholesale Grocers' Association of America. 

September 27, 1973

Three Philadelphia women have been selected as Outstanding Young Women of America for 1973, according to Ms. Pandora Bemis, director of the national program. Nominated for the award by the Futura Garden Club of Philadelphia were Jo Helen Daly, Tanya LamBourne Brumfield, and Clarice Smith.

A full-day of Oktoberfest activities will begin at 8 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 1 on the court square in Philadelphia. Oktoberfest, sponsored by the Philadelphia-Neshoba County Arts Council, will feature a flea market, food, political speaking, music, and other entertainment.

Ronald L. Paul, general manager of the Southern Division of Louisiana-Pacific, and Richard Molpus, president of The Molpus Company, today announced that they had reached an agreement in principal for the purchase by Louisiana-Pacific of two lumber manufacturing facilities in Philadelphia owned and operated by The Molpus Company since 1905.

September 29, 1993 

Plans are under way for new holiday lighting in the downtown area, which will be weatherguard red and white banners. The banners, 28 inches by 80 inches, contain a candle design and the slogan, "Seasons Greetings."

A group of city and county officials met Thursday night and participated in a simulated disaster drill developed through the Neshoba County Emergency Management Agency. The drill is officially called a functional exercise and is conducted once a year.

U.S. Marine Sergeant Dustin B. Ladd was promoted to his present rank on Aug. 1, 2003. He is currently serving with the 4th Marine Expeditionary Anti-Terrorism Brigade as a Marine Security Guard at the U.S. Embassy in Oslo, Norway.

             

September 25, 2013

Dr. Derek Cannon is happy to be practicing medicine in his hometown as a general surgeon at Neshoba County General Hospital. Cannon moved back home this summer with his wife, Heather, and their two children: Isabella, 3, and John David, 18-months.
