Aldermen have granted a request from Philadelphia Transit seeking funding. 

Local and private legislation would allow aldermen to contribute an amount each fiscal year of up to $10,000 in support of the transportation service.

Officials said the city cannot fund private entities — non-profit or for-profit — with public funds without legislative approval

Aldermen decided to move forward with the request after two weeks and seek approval from the Legislature.

In the previous fiscal year, Philadelphia Transit played a crucial role in transporting over 14,800 Neshoba County residents to meet various needs such as work, education, medical appointments, nutrition, shopping, personal matters, and social events, officials said.

Operating Monday through Friday from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m., Philadelphia Transit extends its transportation services not only to Neshoba County but also to residents in Lauderdale and Winston counties as well, proponents say.

In other action, aldermen voted to:

• Approve a motion to pay East Central Planning Development District invoice totaling $15,000 for a CDBG project. The motion was approved unanimously;

• Approve a motion to pay Perry Construction $62,301 for the ADA Improvements Project at Booker T Gymnasium. The motion was approved unanimously;

• Approve a motion to pay Allen & Hoshall invoice totaling $840 for work on the CDBG Booker T Project. The motion was approved unanimously;

• Approve a motion to pay Webster Electric invoice final payment of $30,639 for the Airport Lighting Project. The motion was approved unanimously;

• Approve a motion to allow road bores for Maxxsouth under the following: Church Street, Byrd Avenue, E Myrtle Street, Edgewater Drive, Blount Street, Tommy Drive, Macy Drive, and Sol Parker Drive. The motion was approved unanimously;

• Approve a motion to move Justis Lilley from full-time to part-time with the Police Department. The motion was approved unanimously;

• Approve a motion to hire Tatum McMullan as Patrolman 1st class at $16.36 an hour effective Dec. 6. The motion was approved unanimously;

• Approve a motion to place a streetlight at 1104 Old Kosciusko Road. The motion was approved unanimously;

• Approve a motion to purchase a 2023 Dodge Ram 1500 for the Police Department at the lowest quote from Griffis Motors for $52,058. The motion was approved unanimously.
