The Union High School powerlifting team dominated the Class 2A division of the Mississippi High School Activities Association’s state powerlifting championships last Saturday.

It was the fourth straight state championship for the Yellowjackets. Union’s powerlifters led the classifications with 54 points. Scott Central was in second with 32 points followed by Bruce with 31 points and Lake with 23 points.

Of their 10 lifters, Union had six first places, two second places and two third places.

“It would have been our fifth straight,” said Coach Darryl Jones. “We got cut off because of the COVID-19 pandemic. We won the North State and looked good going into state. We had a great team. Then it was canceled.”

Lifters compete in three lifts: the squat, the deadlift and the bench press. The pounds lifted are totaled. The lifter with the most pounds lifted wins.

Jacob Moore set three 2A state records in the 275 pound class. His total pounds lifted of 1,680 pounds was a state record as were his 700 pound squat and his 675 dead lift.

Moore is a senior and has signed to play football with East Central next fall.

Zach Collins placed second in the 275 class with a total of 1,500 pounds.

Alex Sharp won the 308-pound division with a total of 1,480 pounds. Alec Pientowski was third in the division with 1,300 pounds lifted.

Brandon Killens won the 220 pound division with a lift of 1,360 pounds.

John O’Neal was second in the 242 division with a total lift on 1,350 pounds. O’Neal actually tied for first place in the division. But he outweighed the other lifter and that was the tie breaker.

Raylond Nettles won the 198 pound division with a total of 1,400 pounds lifted.

Jaheim Gill won the 181 pound division with a total of 1,335 pounds lifted.

Carlos Hickman won the 165 pound division with a total lift of 1,265 pounds.

Drew Sharp placed third in the 123 pound division with a total of 785 pounds.
