The Union basketball teams have swung back into action with two games scheduled for this week.

Union was to have played Scott Central on Tuesday and hosted Newton County on Thursday in a make up game. The Yellowjacket teams are set to visit Newton High School next week for both teams next Friday. Both teams have had to schedule around the COVID-19 virus but have stay well for the most part.

The Union boys stand at 10-3.

“We have been lucky as far as the virus goes,” Coach John Darnell said. “We don’t have a lot of depth right now. We are the type of team that plays good defense and finds a way to win.

E.J. Campbell plays point guard. Bryce Young is the second guard while the forwards are Jamarcus Jones and Kenyon Clay. Dylan Harrison starts at center.

The Yellowjackets last played December 23 and picked up a big win over Northeast Lauderdale.

“I was proud of the way the boys played,” Darnell said. “We have a tough district schedule coming up. Newton will be the top team to beat, and everyone else will be battling for the No. 2 spot.”

The Union girls stand at 13-3 and are currently ranked No. 4 in the state among Class 2A girls teams.

All but one player is back from last year’s team that went 23-8. But in this COVID-19 season, there have been challenges. Coach Matt Wilbanks said the team has had to play without some of its players at times because they were quarantined.

“There was a couple of weeks we only had seven players,” Wilbanks said. “We had to change our style of play to keep from getting into foul trouble but everyone stepped up.”

Kamyia Russell starts at point guard while Keirra Russell is the No. 2 guard. Keshona Smoot plays the No. 3 guard while Madison Buckley starts at forward and Trinity Lambert is at center. Players also seeing action are Taniqua Hunter and Georgia Cooper.

Wilbanks said the region race should be a wide open race.

“Newton is always tough but everyone has improved,” Wilbanks said. “We are working hard and adding on.”

The Lady Yellowjackets last saw action in the Lamar School tournament where they went 2-1. They defeated Presbyterian School of Hattiesburg42-31 and Sylva-Bay 54-37, and lost a 53-25 decision to Jackson Academy.
