Warriors go 2-1 in holiday Coast tournament

The Choctaw Central basketball teams returned to action after the holidays when they visited Neshoba Central Tuesday night in prep basketball action.

It will be the only game the Warriors play this week. They entered the week with a 7-4 record.

The Choctaw Central boys went 2-1 in the St. Martin tournament which was held on the Gulf Coast last week. They lost a 55-53 decision to Blount (Ala.) last Monday but bounced back to beat Rain (Ala.) of Mobile 52-51 and Pass Christian 61-51.

The Choctaw Central girls did not play during the Thanksgiving holidays. They enter the week with an 8-1 record. In addition to the Neshoba Central game, the Warriors play Pine Grove in the South Pontotoc tournament this Saturday. Pine Grove played for the Class 1A state championship last week.

The Choctaw Central boys opened with Blount (Ala.) in a game that went down to the wire. Blount led 11-9 after the first quarter. The Warriors outscored Blount 20-13 in the second quarter to lead 29-24 at the half. Blount would outscore the Warriors 19-16 in the third quarter . Choctaw Central carried a 45-43 lead into the final eight minutes of play. Blount outscored the Warriors 12-8 in the fourth quarter to take the win. William McKinney led with 15 points while Kashden Bell added 14 and Ocavious Jones added 12 points.

The Warriors bounced back to take a one-point win over Rain (Ala.). Rain led 19-18 after the first quarter. Rain outpointed Choctaw Central 8-7 in the second quarter and led 27-25 at the half. The Warriors would take the lead in the third quarter, outscoring Rain 12-9. Choctaw Central carried a 37-36 lead into the final stanza and held on for the win. Jones led with 13 points and McKinney added 11.

The Warriors went ahead in the second quarter and held on for the win against Pass Christian. Pass Christian led 18-11 after the first quarter. The Warriors would outscore Pass Christian 23-12 in the second quarter and led 34-30 at the half. Choctaw Central outscored Pass Christian 28-19 in the second half.

Jones led with 15 points while McKinney and Chris Lewis both added 13, and Gerald Isom put in nine points.

"When we take care of the fundamentals, we are a good team," Coach Brent Farmer said. "The team is starting to come together. We played great competition on the Coast last week and that gave us a lot of experience."
