Both Union basketball teams took victories Monday night and advanced to the second round of the Mississippi High School Activities Association’s Class 2A state tournaments.

The Union girls took a 46-43 victory over Bogue Chitto and the Yellowjackets defeated Wesson 53-35.

The Union girls will host Puckett in their second-round game Wednesday. On Thursday, the Union boys will travel to Bay Springs.

The Union girls were in a low-scoring contest until the final quarter. Union carried a 27-24 lead into the fourth quarter. Then both teams scored 19 points and the Lady Yellowjackets held on to their four point advantage.

Madison Buckley led Union with 10 points while Keirra Russell, Kamyia Russell, Georgia Cooper and Taniqua Hunter each scored eight points.

Union improved to 23-6 with the victory.

The third quarter was the difference for the Union boys as they took a win over Wesson.

Union led 9-7 after the first quarter. The Yellowjackets would outscore Wesson 15-14 in the second quarter and led 24-21 at the half.

Union then outscored Wesson 18-5 in the third quarter and carried a 42-26 lead into the final eight minutes of play. Union outscored Wesson 11-9 in the final quarter.

Jamarcus Jones led Union with 13 points while Kenyon Clay added 12 points. Bryce Jones finished with 10 points.

The Union boys improved to 19-7.
