Union softball sweeps Philly, baseball battles in district play

The Union softball team won three out of four games last week as they swept a division doubleheader from Philadelphia. 

Union hammered Philadelphia 17-1 and 18-0 on Tuesday but split a doubleheader on Saturday, beating Northeast Lauderdale 13-12 while falling 4-3 to Ethel.

The Union baseball team split a division series with Philadelphia, winning 12-9 on Tuesday while losing 2-1 on Thursday. They then fell 14-4 to Lake on Saturday.

The Lady Yellowjackets improved to 13-10 as they won three out of four games last week, sweeping Philadelphia 17-1 and 18-0 on Tuesday. They then beat Northeast Lauderdale 13-12 on Saturday but lost 4-3 to Ethel.

In the first game on Tuesday, Union won 17-1 after scoring 12 in the first on just four hits and 19 walks. Destiny Moulds was 2-for-3 with a double while Abigail Cleveland singled and had three RBIs. Tiara Campbell singled and drove in two runs as well for the last Jackets. Cleveland pitched all three innings to get the win, giving up one run on two hits while striking out seven. 

In the second game of the day on Thursday, Union won 18-0 after a 15-run first inning. Union had seven hits as Maggie Atkinson was 2-for-2 with three RBIs. Maggie Davis tripled and drove in two runs while Alanee Wheeler singled and had two RBIs. Aubrey Coleman started and pitched two innings and gave up three hits while striking out five while Abigail Cleveland pitched the last inning. 

In the first game of the day on Saturday, Union held on to take a 13-12 win over Northeast Lauderdale. Union scored three in the first, third, fourth and sixth innings while Northeast rallied with three in the with and eight in the seventh. Union had 14 hits in the contest, led by Aspen Lovern who was 3-for-3with two doubles and five RBIs. Tiara Campbell was 3-for-4 with a double, triple and two RBIs while Abigail Cleveland was 3-for-6 and scored three runs. LaCee Bishop was 2-for-5 while Alanee Wheeler also doubled. Waller pitched the first 4 2/3 innings and gave up one run on three hits while striking out 10. Aubrey Coleman pitched the last 2 1/3 innings and gave up 11 runs with just two runs on five hits and seven walks. 

Union finished the week with a 4-3 loss to Ethel on Saturday in their second game of the day. Ethel scored single runs in the first, third, fourth and sixth while Union scored all three runs in the seventh. Union had eight hits as Tiara Campbell was 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs while Abigail Cleveland was 2-for-4 with a double. Raleigh Dickerson was also 2-for-4 and scored a run while Maggie Davis singled and scored.

The Yellowjackets lost two out of three games last week, including a split with Philadelphia in district play to move to 11-8 on the season. 

On Tuesday, Union won 12-9 as they scored four runs in the sixth innings. Each team had just five hits as the Jackets took advantage of eight walks and four errors. Jacob Freeman doubled and drove in four runs while Turner Johnson also had a double. Austin Lee was hit twice and scored three runs while Kooper Fultz and Rafe Manning each scored two runs. Fultz pitched the first three innings and gave up seven runs on four hits while striking out four. Freeman pitched the last four innings and go the win, giving up two unearned runs on one hit and two walks while striking out seven. 

The Tornadoes split the series on Tuesday as they took a 2-1 win over the Yellowjackets. Philly scored in the bottom of the seventh on a walk-off single to take the win. Union had just two hits as Kooper Fultz singled and scored. Turner Johnson had Union’s other hit. Tanner Watkins was solid on the mound, giving up two unearned runs on four hits and a walk while striking out nine. 

On Saturday, Union dropped a 14-4 decision to Lake. Lake scored nine in the first and five in the fourth to take the run-rule win. Union had just three hits as Kooper Fultz tripled and scored two runs. Rafe Manning had an RBI single while Tanner Watkins also singled. Jackson Flake started and pitched two innings, giving up nine unearned runs on four hits and four walks. Manning pitched the next two innings and gave up five runs on four hits.
