Union girls win two, improve to 15-3 as region play starts

The Union Lady Yellowjackets improved to 15-3 on the season as they picked up a pair of wins last week.

Union cruised to a 44-34 win over Sebastopol on Friday and then took a hard-earned 45-41 win over Heidelberg on Saturday.

The Yellowjackets split their two games, beating Sebastopol 47-24 but lost 70-52 to Bay Springs on Saturday as they moved to 15-2 on the season.

Union will open Division 6-2A play on Tuesday as they travel to Scott Central in their only action of the week. The following week, Union will host Lake on Tuesday, Jan. 14 and Newton on Friday, Jan. 17.

The Lady Yellowjackets built a big lead and cruised to a 10-point win over the Lady Bobcats on Friday night.

Keirra Russell led Union with 13 points while Kaliyah Temple had seven points and Madison Buckley added six points.

Sebastopol 24

The Yellowjackets outscored Sebastopol in every period and took a 23-point win over the Bobcats.

E.J. Campbell led Union with 16 points while J.T. Vance had 11 points. Jamarcus Jones had eight and Kenyon Clay added six points.

Heidelberg 41

The Lady Yellowjackets picked up a big win in the Newton Classic on Saturday as they took a four-point win over the Lady Oilers.

"That was a big win for us," Union coach Matt Wilbanks said. "Heidelberg has a really good team. I was looking to see how we would measure up with one of the better teams in Class 2A. I'm proud of these girls as we get ready to start division play."

Kamyia Russell led Union with 17 points while Keirra Russell had 11 points.



Bay Springs boys 71

The Bulldogs started hot and ran out to a big lead and took a 20-point win to hand the Yellowjackets their second loss of the season.

Bay Springs jumped out to a 26-15 lead at the end of the first and led 38-28 at the half. Bay Springs pulled away in the third, outscoring Union 20-11 to lead 58-39 going to the fourth.

J.T. Vance led Union with 19 points while E.J. Campbell had 13 points.
