Union girls pick up 20th victory with win over Stringer

Union girls basketball coach Matt Wilbanks set one of the team goals was to win 20 games this season.

The Lady Yellowjackets got there this week as they took two wins and improved to 20-5 on the season with a 63-36 win over Stringer and a 47-37 win over Philadelphia.

The Yellowjackets beat the Stringer boys 71-32 to lost to division-leading Philadelphia 69-4.

Union will travel to Philadelphia on Tuesday in a key division contest and will then travel to Newton on Friday.

The Lady Yellowjackets dominated the action and used a balanced scoring attack to take a 37-point win over the Lady Red Devils on Saturday.

Union led 13-6 at the end of the first and then outscored Stringer 22-4 in the second to lead 35-10 at the half. Union continued to extend its lead in the second half, outscoring Stringer 18-9 in the third and 10-7 in the fourth.

Taniqua Hunter led Union with 13 points while Keirra Russell had 12 points. Madison Buckley had 11 points and Georgia Cooper added nine points.

The Yellowjackets started fast and cruised to a 39-point win on Saturday night over the Red Devils.

Union jumped out to a 21-4 lead in the first period and led 36-10 at the half. Union continued to extend its lead in the second half, outscoring Stringer 17-13 in the third and 18-9 in the fourth.

J.T. Vance led Union with 18 points while E.J. Campbell had 12 points. Jamarcus Jones had eight points while Jada Russell had seven. Kenyon Clay and Jamarion Harmon added six points.

Philadelphia 37

The Lady Yellowjackets were strong in the middle two periods and took a 10-point win over the Lady Tornadoes.

Union led 16-12 at the end of the first before outscored Philly 13-6 in the second to lead 29-18 at the half. Union then outscored Philly 14-5 in the this and led 43-23 going to the fourth. Philadelphia took the fourth period 14-4 for the final.

Keshona Smoot led Union with 13 points while Keirra Russell had nine points and Trinity Lambert had eight and Kaliyah Temple added seven points.

Shaynace Thomas had 17 points to lead Philly while Zharia Leflore Leflore had 11 points.

The Tornadoes started strong and finished better to take a 28-point win over the Yellowjackets on Tuesday.

Philly led 21-10 at the end of the first and 32-23 at the half. The Tornadoes outscored the Yellowjackets 12-10 in the third and finished by outscoring Union 25-8 in the fourth.

Jordan Hill led Philly with 23 points while Ira Chambers hd 12 points. Tanner Boler had 10 points while Nick Crockett and Nick Green each had eight points apiece.

J.T. Vance had 25 points to lead Union while Jada Russell added seven points.
