The Leake Academy Rebels captured their first state football championship as they defeated Adams County Christian School 10-0 in the MAIS Class 5A title game.

The Rebels finished undefeated with a 13-0 record. Throughout the season, it was their offense that kept coming back to win big close games. But on this night, it was the Rebel defense held ACCS at bay throughout the contest that was played at Jackson Academy.

“Defense wins championships and that’s what we did tonight,” said Leake Academy Head Coach Brian Pickens afterward. “Offense was rolling for us all year and we are very proud of our offense. But the defense stepped up tonight.”

The Rebels went up 3-0 midway through the first quarter on Cole Arthur’s 25-yard field goal,

And that’s how it stood until Thomas Cheatham returned an interception 47 yards for a touchdown in the fourth quarter to ice the victory.

Leake Academy finished with 86 total yards on offense. ACCS had 162 total yards.
