Tornadoes take region win over Newton High

The Philadelphia Tornadoes started Region 6-2A play with a 68-62 victory over the Newton High School Tigers.

On Saturday, the Tornadoes came back to beat McAdams 67-53.

Andrew Carter led the Tornadoes with 21 points in their win over Newton. Tekaviuw Bingham added 15 points; Devontae Scott scored 13 points; and J.J Hudson scored 12,

Against McAdams, Carter led with 24 points. Bingham had 15. Scott scored 13 and Hudson had 12 points.

Philadelphia will visit Scott Central on Tuesday and visit Lake on Friday. The Tornadoes stand at 4-4 overall and 1-0 in the region.

The Tornadoes are basically playing a Region 6-2A schedule. The region tournament will be held at Scott Central in February.

The Lady Tornadoes split a pair of games this past weekend. They dropped a 38-33 decision to Newton High School and bounced back to crush McAdams 68-35.

Against Newton, Philly's leading scorer was Jaiden Burnside with 11points. Zharia Leflore added nine points while Jaenasha Clemons, Markasia Dupree and Shaytrece Mingo all scored three points. Emma Taylor and Hailey Donald both scored two points.

Burnside was the leading scorer against McAdams with 21 points.  Clemons scored 17 points while Zharia Leflore added 13 points, Shaytrece Mingo eight points, Emma Taylor seven points and Dupree two points.

“We didn’t start playing until December,” Coach Danielle Spurlock “That gave us a lot of practice time so we will take the good with the bad. It has been different, having to go through all of the safety guidelines, making sure our kids are safe. They are very adaptive.”

Spurlock said the Lady Tornadoes are playing a zone defense but will do some pressing as the season progresses.

Hailey Donald and Zhaire Leflore play the guard positions. The forwards of Markasia Dupree and Jaensha Clemons, and Emma Taylor is at center.
