Tornadoes rally to knock off Newton High 24-18

The Philadelphia Tornadoes regrouped in the second half to take a 24-18 victory over the Newton Tigers Friday night in prep football action.

The Tornadoes will host Union Friday night in a big Region 6-2A matchup Both teams have one region loss to Scott Central. The winner will get to host a first round playoff game while the loser will be on the road.

“It’s going to be a big game,” Philadelphia Coach David Frey said. “Union is having one of its best seasons. They are much improved and we have to play a solid game against them.

“Newton was improved but we made too many mistakes. We regrouped at halftime and battled back.”

Newton got on the scoreboard with 32 seconds left in the first quarter. The Tigers picked up a Philadelphia fumble and returned for a touchdown. The extra point failed and the Tigers led 6-0.

Philadelphia took the kickoff and drove for a touchdown in seven plays. Kadarius Calloway caught a 22-yard TD pass from Marcus Beamon. Connor Long kicked the extra point and the Tornadoes led 7-6 with 10:21 left in the second quarter.

That’s how it stood until Newton intercepted a pass and returned 86 yards to the Philadelphia three-yard line. The Tigers then punched it into the end zone four plays later. The try for two failed Newton led 12-7 with 2:42 left in the first half.

Newton intercepted another pass with 30 seconds left in the half and returned it to the five-yard line. The Tigers completed a 5-yard TD pass on the next play. The try for two failed and Newton led 18-7 at the half.

In the third quarter, Calloway caught a 20-yard TD pass from Beamon in the third quarter, Long’s kick was good and the Tigers led 18-14.

Later in the third quarter, Newton completed a pass and then fumbled. Philadelphia Jatarian Hudson recovered it and returned it 30 yards for touchdown. Long’s kick was good and the Tornadoes led 21-18 with three minutes left in the third quarter.

In the fourth quarter, Dedrick McWilliams intercepted a pass and returned it to the Newton 35-yard line. Long would kick a field goal to end the scoring.
