The Philadelphia Tornadoes are looking forward to a tough football schedule in 2021, and it doesn’t get much harder than their season opener at Noxubee County on Aug. 27.

The Tigers made it to the finals of the Class 3A state playoffs last season where they lost to Magee 49-26.

Other teams on the Tornadoes’ non-district schedule include Winona, which lost to Noxubee County in the state quarterfinals, Bay Springs, Leake Central and West Lauderdale.

“I am good at making tough schedules,” Coach David Frey said. “We have Noxubee, Winona, Bay Springs, West Lauderdale. You would think those games will get you ready for your district. I want to play the best. That should prepare us for our district.”

The Tornadoes are playing in Region 5-2A along with Kemper County, Lake, Newton and Nanih Waiya.

“Kemper County is going to have a good team this year,” Frey said. “They will probably compete for state 2A championship. Newton and Lake are going to be good. And Nanih Waiya is a new team for us. They are always strong.”

Frey is an alumnus of Nanih Waiya and knows the Warriors well.

“It will be a homecoming for me,” Frey said.

According to the Mississippi High School Activities Association, fall practices start on Monday, Aug. 9. Teams will be allowed to play a jamboree/ scrimmage game on Aug. 20, and the season kicks off on Aug. 27.

Frey said the heat is going to be a factor in the first few games and getting ready for that has been a focus during the off-season program.

“We will be watching our kids as far as the heat goes,” Frey said. “They are going to have to play in it so we have to get used to it. We have been running a lot so they can get used to it for those first few games. Those first few games are going to be brutal.”
