Tornadoes advance to 2nd round of playoffs

The Philadelphia Tornadoes will be playing for their seventh win in a row Friday night when they visit the Heidelberg Oilers in the second round of the class 2A state playoffs.

The two teams met in the first round of the playoffs last season with the Tornadoes taking a 32-30 victory. Philadelphia enters the game with a 6-5 record following their 48-21 first round win over Pelahatchie. The Oilers, 5-6, defeated Bogue Chitto 34-14 in their first round game.

“They are very athletic and we are going to have to  play like did in the second half to win,” said Tornadoes coach David Frey. “We didn’t play well in the first half and had to regroup at the half. We played a lot better in the second half.”

Pelahatchie got on the scoreboard on the third play of the game on a 69-yard rush. The extra point was good and the Chiefs led 7-0.

Philadelphia answered when Jacammeron Boler rushed 13 yards for a touchdown. Adrian Luke kicked the extra point and the score was tied 7-all with 1:22 left in the quarter.

In the second quarter, Pelahatchie recovered a fumble on the Tornado 10-yard line. Three plays later, the Chiefs scored on a 3 yard run. The extra point was good and the Chiefs led 14-7 with 9:21 left in the quarter.

The Tornadoes quickly answered when quarterback Dee Burnside ran 71 yards for a touchdown. The extra point was good and the score was tied 14-14 with 9:06 left in the half.

Philadelphia scored the only points in the third quarter when Burnside ran 70 yards for a touchdown. The score was set up by a fumble recovery by CJ Chaney on the Philadelphia’s 22 yard line. The extra point was good and the Tornadoes led 21-14 with 4:17 left in the quarter.

Philadelphia scored four touchdowns in the fourth quarter to ice the victory. Burnside scored two touchdowns on runs of 20 and 41 yards. Keathan Graham scored on a 13-yard run, and Chance Greer scored on a 5-yard run.

Burnside finished the night when 266 yards rushing on 12 attempts. He scored 4 touchdowns. Greer rushed for 115 yards on 15 carries and scored one touchdown.
