Tornado basketball, soccer teams return to action

The Philadelphia High School basketball and soccer teams are swinging back into action this week as they return from the Christmas break.

The winter sports teams didn’t get started until early December, and then they had to contend with scheduling issues due to the COVID-19 pandemic, athletic director Barry Richardson said.

“We have had the same issues with COVID-19 that other schools have. We have had to reschedule some games until January,” Richardson said. “The main thing is that we maintain a safe environment for our students and staff.”

Robert Byrd is coaching the Philadelphia boys while Danielle Spurlock coaches the girls. The Philadelphia basketball teams open district play at home Friday against Newton High School. They are slated to visit McAdams on Saturday.

Hunter Ketteringham is coaching boys soccer team while Courtney Bounds is coaching the Lady Tornadoes. Both teams returned to action Tuesday at Quitman.
