The 'Maryland man'
Kilmar Abrego Garcia is no longer Democrats’ favorite former Maryland resident. This Salvadoran citizen became a hero to the left in March when he was rounded up and deported to his home country.
Sen. Chris Van Hollen, Maryland Democrat, demanded justice for his “constituent,” going so far as to visit him in the Salvadoran clink, which happens to be nowhere near as terrible as he had been claiming.
El Salvador’s president, Nayib Bukele, mockingly shared photos of the encounter between the senator and detainee: “Kilmar Abrego Garcia, miraculously risen from the ‘death camps’ and ‘torture,’ now sipping margaritas with Sen. Van Hollen in the tropical paradise of El Salvador!”
Just about everything the left has said on the subject has been disproved. Willing to put their trust only in the word of an illegal alien from El Salvador and his $1,000-an-hour attorneys, liberals fell into a trap of their own making. “Maryland man” has never been the innocent victim he was portrayed to be.
First, the Justice Department released files on his 2019 arrest for loitering at Home Depot. He attracted police attention while hanging out with known MS-13 gang members under active surveillance. Mr. Abrego Garcia had more than $1,700 in cash on him at the time.
He’s not exactly a model noncitizen. Take it from his jailhouse bride. Jennifer Vasquez Sura convinced a Prince George’s County judge that the man she married was so violent that she needed a protective order.
“I have multiple photos/videos of how violate he can be, and all the bruises he has left me,” she wrote in a handwritten plea for the court’s help. In a second declaration, she added: “I also have a recorded that told my ex-mother-in-law that even if he kills me no one can do anything to him.”
As the Tennessee Star first reported, Mr. Abrego Garcia was stopped in the state in 2022 while transporting eight people from Texas to Maryland. He had an envelope with $1,400 in cash in his pocket.
According to notes released by the Department of Homeland Security, these “construction workers” were moving across the country without any luggage. All eight provided Mr. Abrego Garcia’s address when asked where they lived.
The cops at the scene knew exactly what was going on, and they said so among themselves in conversations caught on body camera footage. Nobody in the car had a valid driver’s license, but federal agents supposedly ordered them all released anyway.
Another illegal alien, Jose Ramon Hernandez-Reyes, owned the Chevy Silverado that Mr. Abrego Garcia drove that evening. Hernandez-Reyes is in prison for human smuggling, but Justice Department officials are reportedly offering him limited immunity for his testimony against Maryland man.
Such testimony shouldn’t even be necessary. Mr. Abrego Garcia doesn’t belong here, and he should have been escorted back to his home country after he received his due process in 2019. He won’t be returning.
“There is no scenario where Abrego Garcia will be in the United States again,” Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said Thursday. “If he were to come back, we would immediately deport him again because he is a terrorist. He is a human smuggler. He is a wife beater.”
In their manic drive to gainsay anything Donald Trump does or says, Democrats have made themselves look like fools. The smarter of Maryland man’s former champions are already backtracking.
