Senior Spotlight: Posey ready to give it all this year

You could say Philadelphia High School senior Trey Posey has football in his blood.

His grandfather, Bobby Posey, coached for years in Neshoba County and had long, successful career stops at both Philadelphia and Neshoba Central. His father, Bob Posey, played football at Neshoba Central and has been a part-time assistant football coach at Philadelphia High School for nearly 20 years.

“I have always been around football,” Posey said. “I went to the games and practices. When I was younger, I always thought one day. I would be playing here.

“Now that I am a senior and this is my last year, it seems like it went by pretty fast. I remember stuff I did my ninth-grade year like it was yesterday.”

Posey and his Tornado teammates have been working out as they get ready for their Aug. 27 season opener at Noxubee County. He will play tight end and slot receiver this season.

Posey said he was not looking forward to the August heat when fall practice started last week. But the Tornadoes have been training all summer so they are somewhat used to it.

“This summer, we worked out Tuesday through Thursday,” Posey said. “We came in around 7:30 a.m. and stayed until around 10 a.m. On Tuesdays, we went to 7-on-7 camps and that could last until 1 p.m. We played Newton, Scott Central and teams around here. We did pretty good. It was hot and that will help us during fall practice.”

Football is not Posey’s only concern at Philadelphia. He is a straight A student with a 4.0 GPA and is vying for the valedictorian honors. He is taking composite English, AP physics, dual credit algebra, AP government right now and dual credit history.

“It’s wake up, go through my routine in the morning, get to school and see what each class has for me,” Posey said. “After football practice, I decide what is the most important assignment and which class comes first. That’s how I focus.

“During football season, you get tired and it’s tough. But if you get through it, you will be a lot better person. Football will teach you a lot of things, not just about football. But working hard, getting results, After football season, I will have a lot more time.”

His favorites are as follows:

• Favorite subjects in school -  science and history;

• Favorite dinner – a home cooked steak;

• Favorite movie – Either ‘Remember the Titans’ or ‘The Longest Yard’; and,

• Favorite video game: Call to Duty.

Posey also likes to fish but hasn’t had a lot of time for that lately. He is a member of the Philadelphia tennis team and made it to the third round of the mixed doubles state tournament with teammate Ruthie Storment. He used to play travel ball soccer but not since he started high school.

After graduation, Posey plans to attend East Central Community College and then attend the University of Southern Mississippi. He is interested in becoming a physical therapist.
