After splitting with Simpson Academy in the regular season, Leake Academy girls coach Amanda Hatch knew her Rebelettes would have their hands full in the opening round of the Class 4A state tournament last week.

Hatch was right.

The Rebelettes came up short as Simpson ended Leake Academy's season with a 47-44 win in the opening round of the Class 4A state tournament on Wednesday at Hartfield Academy.

The loss ends Leake's season with a 31-3 record with two of those losses coming to Simpson.

Simpson started out hot but Leake got going and led 15-12 at the end of the first period. Simpson outscored Leake 17-15 in the second period as the Rebelettes held a 30-29 lead at the half. Simpson took control of the game in the second half as they outscored Leake 14-9 to lead 43-39 going into the fourth. Leake took the fourth period 5-4 and had three chances to tie the game but couldn't get the shot to fall as Simpson held on for the win.

Miriam Prince led Leake with 12 points while senior Ashley Smith had 10 points and four rebounds. Emmi Harkins had nine points while Emeri Warren had eight points. Morgan Freeny had five assists while Mabry Mayfield had five rebounds.
