Rockets take win over Holmes in region play

The Neshoba Central Rockets remained undefeated in Region 2-5A play Friday night as they took a hard-earned 23-18 victory over Holmes County Central in prep football action.

“We are getting better each week,” Coach Patrick Schoolar said. “I said at the start, this is a young team and we are going to have to get a few games under our belt. This was our best effort of the season”

The Rockets, now 2-2 overall, on the season, will host  Provine for Homecoming Friday night. Provine comes in at 2-2 after losing to Ridgeland last Friday night.

The Rockets took the opening kickoff and drove down to the Holmes 10-yard line before turning the ball over with a fumble. Holmes took over on its own 16 yard line. A sack put the Bulldogs back on their 8-yard line. When they punted three plays later, a shanked kick went out of bounds on the Holmes 6-yard line. On the next play, Mehki Gaddis scored on a six-yard run. The kick failed and the Rockets led 6-0 with 8:53 remaining in the first quarter.

Gaddis added another touchdown later in the first quarter when he ran 47-yards for a touchdown. John Parker Hancock kicked the extra point and the Rockets led 13-0 with 2:24 left in the first quarter.

Holmes got on the scoreboard in the second quarter on a two-yard scoring run. The try for two failed and the Rockets led 13-6 at the half.

Later in the second quarter, the Rockets forced a punt and took over on the Holmes 42-yard line. Gaddis ran 33 yard to give the Rockets  a first down on the Holmes nine-yard. Two plays later, Elijah Ruffin scored on an eight-yard run. Hancock’s kick was good and the Rockets led 20-6.

Holmes scored on a 25-yard TD pass with three seconds left in the half. At the break, Neshoba Central led 20-12.

Hancock kicked a 22-yard field goal with 1:58 left in the third quarter to increase Neshoba Central’s lead, 23-12.

Holmes scored on a 30-yard TD pass play in the fourth quarter. The try for two failed and the Rockets led 23-18. The Bulldogs were driving later in the quarter but Ruffin incepted a pass to stop the efforts and the Rockets held on for the victory.

The Rockets finished with 258 yards in total offense and six first downs. The Rockets rushed for 205 yards on 37 carries and completed 6-of-13 passes for 53 yards. The Rockets had eight penalties for 80 yards and two turnovers.

Gaddis was the leading rusher with 192 yards on 30 carries. Will Williams had all of the passing yards. Charles Stevenson had four catches for 39 yards while Ruffin had two catches for 14 yards and one rush for eight yards.

The defense had a busy night. Beau Holley had 10 solo tackles, six assists, six tackles for a loss and four forced fumbles. Zack Griffin had four tackles, five assists and two pass break ups. Elijah Ruffin had two solo tackles, three assists and one interception, Carmello Burnside had four solos, two assists and two quarterback hurries. Jeremiah Kirk-Harris had five assists.
