Neshoba Central celebrated homecoming Friday with a 46-7 victory over Canton in prep football action.

The Rockets improve to 6-0 overall and 4-0 in the Region 2-5A standings. They will visit Ridgeland this Friday in a key region game. The Titans, who defeated Callaway 29-19 last week, come in at 4-1 overall and 3-0 in the region standings.

“It’s going to be a big game,” Coach Patrick Schoolar said. “They have only lost one game. We have a big stretch starting here.”

Following the Ridgeland game, the Rockets visit Jim Hill on Oct. 15, and then come home to host undefeated Vicksburg on Oct. 21 and Callaway on Oct. 28.

The Rockets took the opening kickoff and scored on the third play of the game. Quarterback Eli Anderson connected with Elijah Ruffin on a 75-yard TD pass. Hunter Bavetta kicked the extra point and the Rockets led 7-0 with 10:30 left in the first quarter.

That’s how it stood until late in the second quarter. Anderson found Dez McWilliams on a 29-yard TD pass play. Bavetta kicked the extra point and the Rockets led 14-0 with 2:04 left in the half,

With time running out in the half, defensive lineman Maxton Woodward stripped the ball from a Canton runner and returned it 25 yards for a touchdown. Bavetta kicked the extra point and the Rockets led 21-0 at the half.

The Rockets scored a safety and two touchdowns in the third quarter. LaDamien Jones sacked the Canton quarterback in the end zone for a safety, making the score 23-0. Later, Canton recovered a fumble and returned it for a touchdown. The extra point was good and the Rockets led 23-7.

Neshoba Central then added two touchdowns with Anderson connecting with Bryceton Spencer on TD passes of 35 yards and 10 yards. Bavetta kicked the extra point and the Rockets led 37-7 at the end of the third quarter.

Bavetta kicked a 36-yard field goal with 8:30 left in the games, making the score 40-7 in favor of the Rockets. On the ensuing kickoff, Joseph Vargas recovered a fumble. Mekhi Gaddis scored on a 21-yard rush. The try for two failed and the Rockets wrapped up the victory.

The Rockets had 251 yards passing and 101 yards rushing on 16 carries, giving them 352 total yards.

Anderson completed 14-of-27 passes for all of Neshoba Central’s passing yards. Ruffin caught five passes for 113 yards while Dez McWilliams caught five passes for 81 yards. Spencer had two catches for 30 yards and Ja’Naylon Dupree caught two passes for 27 yards. Zander Kirkland had nine rushes for 29 yards and Ken Drummond had two rushes for 25 yards.

Jaharon Griffin had four solo tackles, four assists and two tackles for loss. Jones had four tackles, one for a loss. Ruffin and Beau Holley both had two tackles, two assists and 1,5 tackles for loss. Kelbee Holmes had three solo tackles and one assist. Anthony Hobson had a sack.
