Rockets basketball off to hot 8-1 start

The Neshoba Central boys basketball team is off to an 8-1 start under first year head coach Justin Childs.

The Rockets won their first eight games against Leake Central 67-34, Louisville 68-51, Choctaw Central 42-40, Northeast Lauderdale 66-46, Leake Central 62-49, Kosciusko 62-44, Newton High 76-59 and Water Valley 84-49. On Saturday, they lost their first game at Booneville, 57-34.

Leading the Rocket scorers is Jordan Ben with a 14.2 average. Patsden Williams is averaging 14 points per game. Zae Goodin is averaging 12.6 points per game.

The Neshoba Central Lady Rockets  entered the week with a  5-2 record.

They have scored wins over Leake Central twice, 77-22 and 59-38, Northeast Lauderdale 78-25, Kosciusko 73-52, and Newton High School 72-39. Losses have come to Choctaw Central 66-48, and Clinton High School 63-60.

Leading the Lady Rocket scorers are Zharia Leflore, who is averagung 13.4 points per game, Shaylynn Hunter with a 12.5 average and Lanayah Henry who is averaging 10.4.

“Right now, we tend to have a different leading scorer each night,” Coach Jason Broom said. “I do feel like we need a little more consistency from some of our experienced players. So far,  we haven’t hit a groove where we know where our scoring is going to come from.”

This week, the Rocket teams will visit Choctaw Central on Tuesday and host Pearl Friday.

Choctaw Central

The Choctaw Central Lady Warriors entered the week with a 6-1 record. Wins have come over Pearl 61-31, Neshoba Central 66-48, Newton County 80-46, Germantown 57-56, and Terry 60-42. The Lady Warriors’ only loss came against Bjggersville, 41-38.

Against Terry, Kashahn Wallace led with 11 points and Joclyn Bell had 10.

The Choctaw Central boys standvat 3-4. Wins have come over McLaurin 68-30, Newton County 68-59 and West Jones 56-41.Losses have come to Neshoba Central 42-40, Germantown 57-44, Newton County 58-56, and Terry 59-52.

The Warrior teams have three games rhis week. They host Neshoba Central Tuesday and Jackson Prep on Friday. On Saturday, both teams play Igomar in the South Pontotoc tournament.

Philadelphia

The Philadelphia basketball teams are just getting their seasons under way. The boys stand at 1-2 with a wln over Kosciusko. Losses have come to St. Andrews and Leake Central.

Philadelphia hosts Leake County Tuesday and visits East Webster on Thursdy and Leake Central on Friday.
