Robinson interns at hospital

Elijah Robinson recently took part in East Central Community College Work-Based Learning Program as an Intern with Neshoba General’s Information Technology department.

Through this program, Robinson was hired on as a part time employee working in the IT department as an entry-level Helpdesk technician. He was able to gain real-world work experience in his field of study, Computer Networking.

The hospital benefits from this program by getting part-time help in the IT department to respond to daily Helpdesk requests and install data cabling when needed.

“My time interning at Neshoba General has been of great benefit to me both professionally and personally,” Robinson said. “The wide range of experiences afforded by working alongside a small IT team in a critical business environment such as a hospital is more valuable than any classroom can provide. My internship has afforded me experience in cabling, implementation of various hardware, networking, interpersonal skills, and much more. The learning opportunities are unparalleled if you take the internship seriously.

Robinson worked at the hospital for seven months working the Helpdesk, troubleshooting computer and printer problems, and developing computer network skills such as configuring a switch. Most jobs in the IT field require a two year degree with experience, so being able to get some experience in the field was instrumental in Robinson getting a fulltime job as a Systems Engineer with Pileum, an IT consulting and Systems Integration company in Jackson.

Once he graduates in May, he will have an associates degree, two CompTIA certifications, and almost a year of work experience.

“For anyone seeking a career in Information Technology, East Central Community College has an amazing curriculum,” Robinson said. “With enough work, you can graduate with not only an associate's degree, but also with three internationally recognized certifications: The CompTIA  A+, Network+, and Security+ certifications. Even more valuable, you may be offered the opportunity of an internship where you can gain the most valuable thing a worker can have: experience.”
