Residents warned to stay home due to deteriorating weather conditions

Posted

Neshoba County residents were warned to stay home due to deteriorating road conditions Monday morning.

“Stay home and travel only if you have to!” said Sheriff Eric Clark on Facebook.

A winter storm warning remains in effect and freezing rain was falling about 9:30 a.m. with a layer of ice on most bridges, according to the Sheriff.

The high today is forecast to be 30 degrees and the low tonight 8 degrees.

“USE EXTREME CAUTION IF YOU LEAVE HOME TODAY!” he wrote. “With more freezing rain the road conditions will only continue to deteriorate.”

WHAT...Heavy mixed wintry precipitation is expected. Total snow and sleet accumulations of 1 to 2 inches, especially over western portions of the warned area, and ice accumulations of one quarter to three-quarters of an inch are possible.

WHERE...Portions of east-central, northeast, and south-central Mississippi.

WHEN...Until 6 AM CST Tuesday.

IMPACTS...Power outages and tree damage are likely due to the ice and gusty winds. Travel could be nearly impossible. Very cold wind chills as low as 5 degrees below zero could result in hypothermia if precautions are not taken.

ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Bands of mixed precipitation, including sleet, freezing rain and some snow, will continue to move across the area.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS

If you must travel, keep an extra flashlight, food, and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency.
