Rep. Michael Ted Evans switches from Democrat to Independent

State Rep. Michael Ted Evans of Preston has announced he is no longer affiliated with the Democrat Party and is now an Independent.

Evans is beginning his third term representing District 43 in the state House of Representatives.

Evans represents Kemper County and parts of Neshoba, including west Philadelphia. He was re-elected in November as he ran unopposed as a Democrat.

"The views of the national Democratic nor Republican parties do not represent my views anymore," Evans said. "In the House, it takes 62 votes to get anything votes. The Democrats don't have but 40-something votes. I am hoping that being an Independent will put me in a better position to get things done for my people back home. I can work both sides of the aisle and not be tied down by part affiliation."

The Legislature returned to Jackson this month and Evans said the House has already passed a bill.

"Last year, we realized that the teacher pay raise bill was $18 million short after we passed it," Evans said. "The House has passed a bill that would make that money up."

Evans said the deadline for filing bills is soon and he thinks it will take a week or so to get session going. Representatives are looking to get their committee assignments on Friday.

"We'll get our committee assignments and then all the bills will start getting introduced," Evans said.
