Rebels represent in All-Star contest

Leake Academy will be well represented in this week’s MAIS All-star football game.

Five players from Leake Academy were selected for the contest, which will be played on Friday at 4:30 p.m. at Jackson Prep.

Gunter Scott, Nick Gomillion, Canon Parks, Cole Arthur, and Joseph Scott were selected for the game.

Leake Academy coach Brian Pickens said the selection of five players is a testament to the team’s success in the last two years.

“I think it speaks volumes to the success they have had the last two or three years,” Pickens said. “The team is chosen statewide from the 4A, 5A and 6A coaches. This group of seniors has had a lot of success the last two years, and it’s a huge honor to represent your school and MAIS. I think it says a lot about the success you have had when you have five players selected. They are all very deserving.”

Pickens said when he looks back on the group that posted a 23-3 record the last two years and won the Class 5A championship last year, one thing sticks out about the group.

“The biggest thing about this group of kids was their consistency,” Pickens said. “You knew every game what you were going to get out of them. You knew Cole was going to kick it out of the end zone, and that is huge. You knew what Gunter was going to give you on offense and defense. You knew Joseph was going to defend the run. Nick has been really steady at linebacker the last two years. And you knew Canon was going to be very steady. You knew he was going to hit it hard every time and get you positive yards. I think that consistency was the biggest thing from those guys. You knew what you had in those guys.”
