Rebels fall to 3-2 on season after losing to Heritage Academy

After 103 passes on the night, it was fitting that the Leake Academy and Heritage Academy game was decided on a pass play.

The Patriots drove 68 yards and hit an 8-yard touchdown pass on the last play of the game to take a 34-32 win over the Rebels in a spirited non-district contest.

Leake falls to 3-2 on the season while Heritage improves to 5-1 overall. The Rebels return to action this week as they open district 2-5A play at Copiah Academy.

Leake Academy coach Brian Pickens said he was proud of the way his team played, despite falling one play short of the win.

“First off, that was a great high school football game,” Pickens said. “It was back and forth and entire game and it felt like whoever got the ball last would win. I was really proud of our kids. They came back multiple times and fought all night long. The difference is we got in the red zone three or four times and didn’t get in the end zone. We moved the ball and got a bunch of yards but didn’t finish some drives. We’ve got to finish off those drives with touchdowns. But I was proud of the effort our kids played with.”

Wilcox was 29-of-58 passing for 315 yards with two TDs and an interception. Nowell had 11 catches for 117 yards with one TD while Weaver had seven catches fort 106 yards. Jack Harkins had nine catches for 71 yards while Majure Chandler had two catches for 22 yards.

Wilcox also led the rushing attack with seven runs for 73 yards while Adcock had 63 yards on 19 carries. Weaver had 22 yards on six carries while John David Gill had 20 yards on three carries.

The Rebels will be on the road again as they travel to Gallman to take on Copiah Academy to open district play.
