Rebelettes remain undefeated, currently at 25-0
Despite several moving parts, it was a good week for both Leake Academy basketball teams.
The Rebelettes added two more wins to the their total, running their record to 25-0 with a 59-24 win over Park Place and a 61-47 win over Lamar.
The Rebels also brought home two wins to improve to 17-6 on the season as they beat Park Place 54-4 and Lamar 63-39.
Leake has another busy week scheduled as they travel to East Rankin on Tuesday in a key district matchup for the Rebelettes against the defending Class 5A and Overall Champions. Leake will travel to Wayne on Thursday in another district contest and then host Grace Christian on Saturday.
Last week’s contest against Winston was cancelled because of inclement weather and was not rescheduled.
Leake girls 61, Lamar 47
The Rebelettes pulled away in the second half and took a 14-point win over the Lady Raiders to remain unbeaten on the season.
Leake started hot and led 21-8 at the end of the first period. But Lamar had a big second period and outscored Leake 24-16 in the second to cut the lead to 37-32 at the half. Leake then pulled away in the second half and outscored Lamar 18-11 in the third and 6-4 in the fourth to take the win.
Marleigh Myers led Leake with 13 points and five rebounds while Sarah Prince had 12 points seven rebounds and six assists. Anna Morgan Young and Kylee Boykin each had eight points apiece while Caroline Cheatham had seven points and five assists. Hannah Clark added six points with a pair of 3-pointers.
Leake boys 63, Lamar 39
The Rebels avenged an early-season loss to the Raiders with a 24-point whipping on Saturday.
Lamar held a slim 11-9 lead at the end of the first period before Leake got rolling and outscored the Raiders 24-5 in the second period to take a 33-16 lead at the half. The Rebels put the game away in the third, outscoring Lamar 16-6 to lead 49-22 going to the fourth. The Raiders took the fourth period 17-14 for the final margin.
Samuel Prince led Leake with 28 points while Eli Cantrell had 17 points. Majure Chandler also had seven points while Carter Seal added six points.
Leake girls 59, Park Place 24
The Rebelettes dominated the first half and cruised to a 35-point wn over the Lady Crusaders on Tuesday in district play.
Leake scored early and often in the first half, outscoring Park Place 17-2 in the first period and 20-3 in the second to lead 37-5 at the half. While emptying the bench in the second half, Leake outscored Park Place 14-13 in the third and 8-6 in the fourth to take the win.
Sarah Prince led Leake with 13 points, five assists, four steals and three rebounds while Marleigh Myers had 11 points and four rebounds. Jenna Allen had nine points while Anna Morgan Young had eight points and three steals.
Leake boys 54, Park Place 44
It wasn’t pretty but the Rebels gradually puled away from the Crusaders to take a 10-point win district play last week.
Leake held a slim 15-14 lead at the end of the first period and then outscored Park Place 15-12 in the second to lead 30-26 at the half. Leake gradually pulled away in the second half as they outscored Park Place 15-11 in the third and 9-7 in the fourth.
“Sometimes road district wins are ugly,” Leake coach Jason Morgan said. “But a road district win is worth its weight in gold, and we were glad to get one.”
