Rebelettes pick up 2 victories on the basketball court

The Leake Academy girls knocked off two more of the stronger teams in the MAIS with a pair of wins at the Madison-Ridgeland Academy Tournament last week.

Leake opened the week on fire with a 57-26 win over MRA on Tuesday and then finished with a 73-54 win over Hillcrest Christian on Wednesday.

The Leake girls improve to 4-0 on the season and will return to action next week as they host Copiah on Thursday night. On Tuesday, Nov. 9, Leake will travel to Hartfield in their only scheduled action that week.

MRA 26

The Rebelettes started fast and cruised to a 31-point win over the Class 6A Lady Patriots. 

Leake was on fire early and led 23-1 at the end of the first quarter and outscored MRA 16-12 in the second to lead 39-13 at the half. Leake continued to expand its lead in the second half as they outscored MRA 15-8 in the third to lead 54-21 going to the fourth. MRA took the fourth period 5-3 with a running clock.

Miriam Prince had her best night of the season so far with 22 points while Emeri Warren was 5-of-8 from the field and had 12 points. Katye Jones was 5-of-6 from the free-throw line and had seven points while Morgan Freeny had six points. Allen Kay Wilcox also had five points.

Hillcrest Christian 54

The Rebelettes outscored the Lady Cougars in every period and pulled away to take a 19-point win on Wednesday in the MRA Tournament.

Leake Academy led 19-16 at the end of the first period and outscored Hillcrest 21-15 in the second to lead 40-31 at the half. Hillcrest actually took a one-point lead in the third but Leake pulled away and outscored Hillcrest 18-12 in the third and 15-11 in the fourth for the final margin.

Miriam Prince led Leake with a season-high 24 points and eight assists while Katye Jones had 21 points and eight rebounds and was 9-of-12 from the free through-line. Emeri Warren had nine points and six rebounds while Grace Maxey had nine points and was 3-of-5 from the 3-point line. Morgan Freeny had five points while Ella Bell added four points.
