Rebelettes enter postseason eyeing state championship

After knocking off East Rankin earlier in the season, Leake Academy girls coach Amanda Hatch knew her team was likely to the see the Lady Patriots several more times.

The Lady Patriots, the defending Class 5A and Overall Champions, defending their district title as they beat Leake 42-34, handing the Rebelettes their second loss of the season.

Meanwhile the Rebels weren’t able to hold onto a fourth-period lead as Simpson took a 63-56 overtime win to claim the District 2-5A championship on Saturday at Lamar School.

The Leake girls enter the postseason with a 29-2 record and will be the No. 2 seed in the North 5A Tournament at East Rankin. They will take on Starkville (14-9) in the first game of the tournament. The winner of that game will take on the winner of Pillow Academy and Lamar School on Friday at 4 p.m.

The Leake boys moved to 20-7 on the season and also finish as the No. 2 seed out of district play and will take on Magnolia Heights on Wednesday at 5:15 p.m. The winner of that game will take on the winner of the Heritage and Park Place game on Friday.

East Rankin girls 42, Leake 34

Sarah Prince led Leake with 12 points, six rebounds, three blocks, three assists and two steals. Jenna Allen had 11 points and six rebounds while Marleigh Myershad five points and eight rebounds.

Simpson boys 63, Leake 56

The Rebels weren’t able to hold onto a fourth-period lead as Simpson forced overtime and pulled away to take a seven-point win.

Eli Cantrell led Leake with 18 points while Samuel Prince had 13 points and nine rebounds. Gage Warren had 10 points for the Rebels.

Leake girls 43, Simpson 32

The Rebelettes used a stingy defense and took an 11-point win over the Lady Cougars on Thursday in the semifinals of the District 2-5A Tournament.

Jenna Allen led Leake with 11 points and four rebounds while Sarah Prince had nine points, six rebounds and three assists. Caroline Cheatham had six points and four steals while Marleigh Myers, Addie Crowe and Anna Morgan Young each had five points.

Leake boys 60, Wayne 33

Just as they did in their previous meeting, the Rebels almost doubled up the Jaguars in the semifinals of the district tournament on Thursday.

Samuel Prince led Leake with 21 points and eight rebounds while Eli Cantrell had 11 points. Majure Chandler had eight points while Carter Seal and Gage Warren both had seven points.
