A Preston man out on an indictment for motor vehicle theft was denied bond after he was arrested with drugs over the weekend, authorities say.

The ma, Dustin Chapman, 27, of 937 Cow creek Road, Preston, was arrested and charged with DUI, no driver’s license, no insurance, a seat belt violation and two counts of possession of a controlled substance.

Sheriff Eric Clark said Chapman also had a warrant for failure to appear in court.

Chapman was denied bond because he was out on an indictment for stealing a motor vehicle. Clark said he was charged with the theft in August 2021.

Clark said deputies pulled Chapman over shortly after he attempted to avoid a checkpoint on Highway 16 West at what is known as Townsend’s Old Store near the intersection of county Road 147 just after midnight on Saturday, Dec. 31.

A search of Chapman’s vehicle, a Chevy Silverado, revealed a bag of a white powder like substance believed to be cocaine. Deputies also found a bag containing a felony amount of crystal methamphetamine on Chapman’s person.
