Philadelphia High School’s Trey Posey and Ruthie Storment have advanced to the Class 2A state tennis tournament which will be held starting Monday in Oxford.

The Mississippi High School Activities Association tournament for Class 1A and Class 2A schools will be held at the FNC Tennis Center Stone Park.

Posey and Storment are seeking the mixed doubles gold medals. They are 10-0 as a team and recently won the district tournament which was held at Pisgah. The region was made up of Philadelphia, Pisgah, Madison St. Joseph and Union.

They will enter the tournament as the third seed.

“The competition was tough at district,” Posey said. “We beat St. Joseph in the finals to advance. Anytime you beat a Saint school from the Jackson area, you’ve done something. Most of their kids grow up with tennis lessons. With us, it was show up to practice and learn.”

Both are juniors. They have played in the state tournament in 2019. Of course, there was no state tournament in 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Posey went as a singles player while Storment played girls doubles and mixed doubles.

Both have been playing tennis for several years. Storment started in the sixth grade while Posey started when he was 10 years old.

“My dad (Bob Posey) coaches the team so I have always been around practices,” Posey said.

They will open play in the state tournament against French Camp.

“It’s going to be a tough match,” Storment said.

Storment also played soccer at Philadelphia High School. Posey plays football and soccer.
