The Philadelphia High School Band placed third overall in last weekend’s Excalibur — Showdown at the Kingdom band competition at West Lauderdale High School in Collinsville with seven other competing schools.

In addition to placing third overall, the Philadelphia High School Band received superior ratings in drumline, drum major and excellence in color guard/dance/majorettes.

“I feel the students performed wonderfully,” said Josh Rushing, Philadelphia High School band director.

This year’s music/theme is “Party in Philly,” with songs featuring “Party Rock Anthem,” “Finesse,” “Halftime” and “All I Do Is Win.”

“They have been working hard all year, and they really let it show for the judges, spectators and the world to see,” Rushing said. “Every time they pick up their horns, they are improving and playing their hearts out.”

Philadelphia High School Band Drum Major is Cdyney Porche. The dance captains are Jada Gray and Carolnisha McCart. Color Guard Captains are Elizabeth Gonzalez and Azaria Triplett. The drum captains for the Philadelphia High School band are Laydric Carter, David Fowler and Markus Porche. The Woodwind captain is Layla Carter, and the brass captain is Kameron Tucker.

Krystal Morrow is the color guard and dance coach.

The Philadelphia High School band is composed of 52 students, half of the band being seventh-graders. The band attended summer drum, color guard, dance and band camp.

“I see nothing but potential with them as we continue to move forward with their skills growing,” Rushing said.

The band also received an Excellent Rating at the East Central Community College Concert Festival earlier this year.
