The past two years Union and Newton County have played this intense rivalry game, it has been the Yellowjackets who have come out on top.

However, this past Friday night, it was Newton County’s turn to celebrate a big win. The Cougars took down UHS in the annual battle of Highway 15 at home by a score of 28-7.

The Jackets had no answers defensively against the powerful rushing attack of the Cougars. The offensive juggernaut was led by the duo of Carlois and Carlonte Walker. The brothers combined for 251 rushing yards and three touchdowns. Newton County rushed for 297 yards as a team and tallied 315 total yards of offense on the night.

The Jackets on the other hand, were able to move the ball effectively down the field, but could only find the end zone once in the game.  The lone score was a 25-yard touchdown pass from Kenyon Clay to Markus Jones. Kenyon had another solid passing night, completing 47 percent of his passes for 157 yards and a touchdown, while tallying 34 more yards on the ground.

Markus Jones made his five receptions count for 152 yards and a TD in the losing effort. Jaylon Buckley carried the ball 18 times for 80 yards to lead the Jacket running backs for the third straight game. Union tallied 300 total yards on the game, including 143 yards on the ground, but turnovers and penalties cost them on the road against their rival.

Newton County improves to 3-0, while Union falls to 2-1 in 2020. The Cougars will hit the road to play Sumrall while the Jackets will head back home for homecoming to host East Webster on Friday night.
