Neshoba moves up to new 6A class

Neshoba Central will move up to Class 6A next August as the Mississippi High School Activities Association has added a seventh classification.

The MHSAA last added a new classification in 2009. Then, the MHSAA added Class 6A. Now, they added Class 7A.

The new alignment will have 24 schools in classes 7A, 6A and 5A to have a more competitive balance. With only 24 schools in each classification, the size of each region is changing from the present eight schools for football and four other sports to six in every sport.

The Rockets will be in Region 2-6A next year along with Vicksburg, Callaway, Warren Central, Ridgeland and Columbus.

 “We have been playing Vicksburg, Ridgeland and Callaway,” Neshoba Central athletic director Tommy Holland. “We played Columbus last week and Warren Central will be in 6A.

“The top tier 5A schools moved up, number wise, moved up. It will be a different look of things,” Holland said. “But it will be a different look of things.”

Choctaw Central will remain in Class 4A and Philadelphia High School will stay in Class 2A. Union will move from 3A to 2A.
