The Neshoba Central basketball teams open the Region 3-5A portion of their schedule this week when they host Holmes County Central Tuesday night and Ridgeland on Friday.

The Lady Rockets start the week at 15-0 and are ranked No. 2 in a statewide poll. The Rockets come in at 6-6.

The Rocket teams played twice last week. The Neshoba Central girls defeated Noxubee County 94-53 and the Newton County girls 97-41. The Rockets lost a 52-43 decision at Noxubee County and defeated Newton County 65-52.

“We start region play this week,” said Lady Rockets Coach Jason Broom. “We are ready. The competition gets tougher when you start playing region games. We have played the best quality teams we could find. We traveled and played some big 6A teams along with the 4A teams in the area to get prepared. I feel good where we are.”

Noxubee County 53

Hama’ya Field scored 21 points to lead the Lady Rockets past Noxubee County.

Leading 23-13 after the first quarter, Neshoba Central outscored the Lady Tigers 23-11 in the second period and led 46-24 at the half. The Lady Rockets fired up their scoring in the third quarter, outpointing the Lady Tigers 29-10. In the fourth quarter, Neshoba Central outpointed Noxubee 24-19.

Carly Keats scored 12 points, while Shaylynn Hunter and Veronica Williams both scored 9 points.

The Rockets saw their five-game winning streak end in a loss to Noxubee County.

Bryceton Spencer led with 16 points, while Elijah Ruffin scored 12 points. Ruffin was 8-for-10 at the free-throw line.

Newton County 41

The Lady Rockets came on strong in the third quarter to defeat Newton County.

Neshoba Central led 18-12 after the first quarter. The Lady Rockets would outpoint the Lady Cougars 26-17 in the second period and led 44-28 at the half. Neshoba Central outscored Newton County 55-12 in the second half to settle the issue.

Zhaire Leflore and Carly Keats both scored 14 points to lead the Lady Rockets. Williams scored 12 points while Hunter scored 11 and Bo Hunter scored 10.

The Rockets built the lead in the third quarter and held on to beat Newton County.

The Rockets led 16-11 after the first quarter. In a tight second quarter, Neshoba Central outscored the Cougars 16-15 and led 32-26 at the half. The Rockets scored 17 in the third quarter while holding Newton County to 7 and carried a 43-34 lead into the fourth quarter. The Cougars outscored the Rockets 18-16 in the fourth quarter, but Neshoba Central held on for the win.

Dexter Spencer led the Rockets with 14 points while Ruffin added 12. William Dreifuss scored 11 points.

The Rockets are trying to overcome illness and will have three players out against Holmes County.

“We are battling COVID,” said Coach Russell Cruise. “Holmes County is ranked No. 1 in the 5A, and we will have our hands full.”
