After taking second place in NCA High School National Championships in Dallas last year, the Neshoba Central cheer squad had one goal in mind this season and that was to take home a championship.

“Leaving Dallas last year they said that they had unfinished business, they handled that business this weekend,” Head Coach Nikki Morrow said.

The Neshoba Central Varsity Cheerleaders won the National Championship in the Advanced Non-Tumbling Crowd Performance division at the NCA High School National Championships in Dallas at the Kay Bailey Hutchinson Convention Center over the weekend. They competed on Jan. 25-26.

Senior cheerleader Marlee Washington said “it felt amazing” when the win was announced on Sunday.

“It was such a surreal moment,” Washington said. “We were so ecstatic. It was such a good feeling.”

Junior Miley Fulton said taking the title “felt like I was dreaming.”

“We all started bawling our eyes out and screaming,” Fulton said. “We are like one big family and this was important to all of us.”

Each cheerleader was awarded black jacket to signify their championship.

“Leaving Dallas with a black jacket made the whole experience,” senior Shelby Berry said.

Dixie Rebecca Hines, a junior, said her teammates are her best friends.

“When we first came together as a team I knew we would have a strong bond,” Hines said.

Morrow said the title is a product of a lot of hard work from her girls.

“My girls have worked endlessly this year to prepare for this competition,” Morrow said. “We practiced daily at school, on weekends, through Thanksgiving and Christmas break. They never complained, they were focused, they were driven.”

Neshoba captured the title and also received two of three specialty awards voted on by the judges. They won the Stunt Award for the best use of stunts, as well as the Showmanship Award for outstanding showmanship during their performance.

“I’m the proudest coach in the world and I am very lucky to work with such amazing athletes,” Morrow said.

Morrow also thanked Austin McNair and Vikki McNair for their involvement with the program.

Hines said the leadership of Morrow and the McNair’s helped push them to work hard and achieve their goals.

“They gave us opportunities to do things not everyone gets to do,” Hines said.

NCA has been hosting cheerleading championships since 1987, Neshoba Central has gone to the competition for the past four years in a row.

“I told myself I wanted to stick with cheerleading until we won a national championship,” Fulton said. “Now that we have done it once I want to come back and do it again next year.”
