Nearly 40 golf carts catch fire
A fire that destroyed more than 35 golf carts at the Philadelphia Country Club last Friday is under investigation.
The fire at Cart House No. 2 was reported at 7:40 a.m. on Friday, April 18, at 10110 Country Club Road.
“The witness said they heard a loud pop coming from the cart house,” according to Neshoba County Sheiff Eric Clark. “The next time he looked at the building they saw smoke.”
The Philadelphia Fire Department and Tucker Volunteer Fire Department responded to the call. No injuries were reported.
“By the time anyone arrived on scene it was totally engulfed in flames,” Clark said of the cart house.
The fire destroyed an estimated 39 golf carts.
Firefighters battled the flames for close to two hours before clearing the scene at 10 a.m.
Clark said the incident remains under investigation but they suspect the fire was started by an older cart’s battery overheating.
“There are so many things that could have gone wrong with all those batteries charging like that,” Clark said.
