 Fallen soldiers, sailors, airmen and Marines who died in battle defending the United States will be remembered on Monday in Memorial Day observances across  the nation.

Memorial Day services here will be held in at the Fallen Veterans Monument plaza at Dewitt-DeWeese Park starting at 11 a.m.

The program is sponsored by local veterans organizations, including American Legion Post 138, American Legion Post 238, the American Legion Post Ladies Auxiliary and the Veterans of Foreign Wars

 “Memorial Day is a day set aside to pay homage to those people who didn’t make it back,” said retired Col. Ray Crocker who coordinates the local observance. “That that you don’t recall, you repeat again. We need to recall the 102 people whose names are on that the Fallen Veterans monument. If we don’t remember what they have done, it is possible it will happen again. If they had not served … this nation could be totally different.”

Retired Navy pilot and Vietnam veteran David Carter will be the featured speaker. He flew A-4, A-7, S-2 aircraft while assigned to Air Test & Evaluation Squadron 5, and the F-104 at the Test Pilot School at Edwards Air Force Base. He was qualified serve in submarines and as the officer of the deck underway.

Carter lives in Neshoba County with his wife, the former Marlene Vowell. They have been married for 50 years and have three three sons, serving in the Army, Navy and Marine Corps and grandson in the Marine Corps. Another grandson is starting his junior year at the Naval Academy. In all, they have 16 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.

Carter is an admissions counselor (Blue & Gold Officer) for the U.S. Naval Academy working with Central Mississippi schools and U.S. Senate and Congressional staff members for academy nominations.  He promotes the annual Boys State and Girls State as a leadership and recruiting event.

He was a product design engineer at Ford Motor Company and worked in senior management positions with Volvo,  Navistar and Designline International after leaving the Navy. He currently operate a local business repairing and renovating homes.  

Following Carter’s speech, the names on the monuments honoring Neshoba County’s war dead from each of America’s wars will be read.  

 Readers will be Cassandra Gibbs, Obbie Riley, Tim Gibbs and Wendell Jackson.

The program will start with the presentation of colors and the Pledge of Allegiance. There will be a devotional and then the Gold Star mothers and guests will be recognized. Cecil Hooker will sing “God Bless America” and the 367th Maintenance Co. will lower the flag to half staff and perform a gun salute. Tim Moore will play taps.
