MDEQ awards $18K grant to county to help remove rubbish

Neshoba County has received an $18,320 grant from the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality that will be used to help remove rubbish at the county’s waste convenience center, officials said.

Supervisors voted in their Monday meeting to purchase a second 75-foot debris trailer. With two, the county will swap the trailers out when one fills up and is taken to be unloaded.

In other matters, supervisors voted to:

• Approve the hiring of Chris Strickland as deputy sheriff/SRO at $15 an hour;

• Approve pay increases for two county jail employees;

• Approve the reimbursement for two CDL testing fees totaling $300;

• Approve inventory removals and disposals for the Road Department;

• Approve a travel request from the Circuit Clerk’s office to attend the Mississippi Circuit Clerk’s Conference July 21-23 in Biloxi;

• Approve a request from Emergency Management to dispose of two 1997 Ford Ambulances through the Deanco Auction Company. The ambulances were previously used by the county’s Ambulance Service. When they were retired, they went to the Linwood and Fairview volunteer fire departments. They are now being disposed of;

• Approve the county employee payroll ending June 14 and totaling $235,413;

• Approve the elected officials' payroll ending June 15 and totaling $41,588;

• Declare recognition of the Independence Day holiday. Because the holiday falls on a Sunday, county employees will be given Monday, July 5, off; and,

• Approve the retirement of Chief Financial Officer / Internal Auditor Rhonda Williamson effective June 25.
