A suspect fleeing a Winston County Sheriff’s deputy was shot by him Sunday night after they crossed over into Neshoba County.

The incident is being investigated by the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation, according to MBI spokeswoman Bailey Martin.

The shooting occurred just after midnight on Sunday, Jan. 26, after a brief chase that ended in Neshoba County along Road 577 between Road 832 and the Winston County Line, according to a press release from MBI.

Upon approaching the vehicle, the deputy discharged his firearm, striking the subject, the release said.

The subject was then transported to a Winston County hospital with a non-life-threatening injury, officials said.

Neshoba County Sheriff Eric Clark said his office received a call for assistance at about 11:51 p.m. By the time Neshoba deputies responded, the shooting and arrest of the currently unidentified subject had already occurred.

Clark said the Winston County deputy had applied a tourniquet to the subject, had the subject in handcuffs, and was waiting for EMS to arrive.

Neshoba County Sheriff’s deputies left the scene at about 12:10 a.m.

The deputy involved in the shooting was not injured, MBI reported. A weapon was recovered from the suspect’s vehicle, and the incident is believed to be captured on the deputy’s bodycam.

“This information is preliminary and subject to change,” Martin said. “MBI is currently assessing this critical incident and gathering evidence. Upon completing the investigation, agents will share their findings with the Attorney General’s Office.”

No further information was available on the incident. When asked if the subject has been charged, Winston County Sheriff Mike Perkins said, “Because this is an ongoing investigation by MBI, I can not comment on anything concerning this investigation. MBI will have to be the contact.”

MBI was unavailable as of press time.
