Man allegedly shoots cousin on bush hog

A Neshoba County man remains in custody on a $75,000 bond after allegedly shooting his first cousin neighbor who was bush hogging Saturday northwest of Union in rural Neshoba County.

The suspect, Justin Hagan, 41, 10181 Road 307, Union, was arrested and charged with aggravated assault with a weapon after hiding in the woods and shooting at the cousin the authorities have only identified as a neighbor of Hagan’s.

Neshoba County Sheriff Eric Clark said his office believes the shooting to be intentional based on interviews with the suspect — and it’s not the first time shots have been fired. “He [Hagan] has repeatedly fired shots to intimidate them and the community,” Clark said.

Less than 24 hours prior, Hagan shot at family members after he followed them home. “He shot in the air as they turned into their drive. This incident was reported at the same time of the Saturday incident,” Clark said.

“It is clear that Justin Hagan does not need to possess a firearm until he learns some anger management tactics,” Clark said.

Clark said Monday that the victim is at home and that hospital personnel were able to remove the shotgun pellets.

Hagan is still in jail on the bond.

Deputies were dispatched to the shooting call at 10091 County Road 307 at about 5 p.m. on Saturday, May 14. The initial caller stated that her husband had been shot while bush hogging and clearing his property.

The victim was riding his tractor when he was riddled with pellets from the shotgun blast, Clark said.

The shooter was concealed in an adjoining wooded area, Clark said.

The victim fled the area and managed to drive himself to his home to alert his wife. She called 911 for law enforcement and medical attention.

Neshoba County Sheriff’s deputies responded to secure the scene for EMS.

The victim was transported by CareMed EMS to Anderson Regional Hospital in Meridian. The victim was treated and later released from the hospital, Clark said.

Sheriff deputies gathered information that led them next door to the home of Hagan. He was apprehended without incident.

Hagan possessed a number of weapons, including a Remington 1100 semi-auto shotgun, Clark said.

“Evidence was collected at the home and from the adjacent woodlot that incriminated Hagan,” Clark said in a release Sunday.

“Hagan was placed under arrest and transported to the Neshoba County Detention Center,” Clark said.
