Local basketball teams swing back into action

The local basketball teams playing in the Mississippi High School Activities Association swing back into action this week after taking some time off for the Christmas holidays.

Most of the games have been non-region so far but January marks the start of the region schedules when the games start to count.



Choctaw Central

The Choctaw Central basketball teams will visit Choctaw County Friday night. On Saturday, the Lady Warriors travel to Pontotoc to play Ripley in the "Tangle on the Trail" tournament.

The Warriors will enter Region 4-4A play the following week. Choctaw Central visits Kosciusko on January 7 and hosts West Lauderdale on January 10.

The Warriors stand at 8-5. The Lady Warriors are 11-1 and ranked No. 1 among Class 4A teams.

On December 21, the Lady Warriors defeated Baldwyn 67-26 in the Tupelo Classic.



Neshoba Central

Neshoba Central returns to action Friday when they host the Southeast Lauderdale Tigers.

The Rocket teams then open Region 5-3A play the following week as they host Holmes County on January 7 and Holmes County on January 10.

On the week prior to Christmas, the Rocket teams split a pair of games with Hattiesburg. The Lady Rockets won 42-28 and improved to 5-6. The Neshoba Central boys lost a 67-58 decision to Hattiesburg.



Philadelphia

Philadelphia High School will visit Kemper County on Friday and then host Morton on Saturday.

Next week, the Tornadoes host Leake County on January 7 and then open Region 6-2A play at Newton High School.



Union basketball

The Union Yellowjacket teams will host Sebastopol on Friday and then play in the Newton County Shootout on Saturday. The Yellowjackets open Region 6-2A play at Scott Central on January 7.

The Union Yellowjackets picked up two more wins during the week before Christmas.

Union opened the week with a 54-48 win over Enterprise and then beat Newton County 41-29.

The Lady Yellowjackets split a pair of games, beating Enterprise 38-27 but falling to Newton County 41-35.

The Yellowjackets built a big lead in the first half and held on to take a six-point win over the Bulldogs.

Union jumped out to an 18-8 lead in the first period and outscored Enterprise 13-9 in the second to lead 31-17 at the half. Union extended its lead in the third, outscoring Enterprise 16-10 to lead 47-27.

J.T. Vance led Union with a season-high 31 points while Jamarcus Jones added 16 points.

The Lady Yellowjackets used a stingy defense to take an 11-point win over the Lady Bulldogs on Tuesday.

In a low-scoring affair, Union outscored Enterprise 9-6 in each of the first two periods to lead 18-12 at the half. Union outscored Enterprise 14-10 in the third to lead 32-22 going to the fourth.

Trinity Lambert led Union with 10 points while Keirra Russell and Kamyia Russell each had seven points apiece. Kaliyah Temple and Keshona Smoot each had six points apiece.

Newton County 29

The Yellowjackets used a strong first half to take its fourth win over the Class 4A Cougars.

Union led 5-0 at the end of the first and 21-6 at the half. Union outscored County 13-11 in the third to lead 34-17.

Jamarcus Jones led Union with 14 points while J.T. Vance had nine points and E.J. Campbell added seven points.

After losing to Union three straight times, the Lady Cougars took the fourth contest with a six-point win on Thursday night.

Newton County outscored Union in each of the first three periods as they led 11-8 at the end of the first and 18-14 at the half. Newton County stretched out the lead as they outscored Union 11-6 in the third to lead 29-20 going to the fourth. Union used a 15-12 advantage in the fourth for the final margin.

Keirra Russell led Union with 11 points while Keshona Smoot added nine points.
