Local athletes recognized for talent

The 2019 football season has come and gone. Three of the teams covered by The Neshoba Democrat made it to the Mississippi High School Activities Association state playoffs.
Neshoba Central finished with a 10-4 record and made it to the Class 5A state championship game. Philadelphia went 12-2 and made it to the third round of the Class 2A state playoffs. Union High School went 6-5 and made it to the playoffs, losing in the first round.
Several players from each of these teams received post season honors. They are as follows.

Neshoba Central
Neshoba Central running back Jarquez Hunter was named to the Mississippi Association of Coaches' (MAC) All-State first team.
Hunter's stats speak for themselves following his junior year. He finished the season with 3,249 all-purpose yards while scoring 232 points.
Hunter had 213 rushes for 2,088 yards and 29 touchdowns. He had 14 receptions for 234 yards and two touchdowns. He had 435 return yards on kickoffs, and 365 return yards on punts.
Hunter also started at outside linebacker where he had 72 tackles and seven sacks.
Offensive lineman Bryce Parkerson was all named MAC First Team offense. Parkerson was a four-year player on the Rockets team and was a big part in getting Neshoba Central into the playoffs for the first time in years in 2018 and 2019. Parkerson played in the Mississippi-Alabama All-Star games and helped lead Mississippi to a 17-16 victory.
Senior running back Tyler Mathis was named to the MAC All-State Second Team. Mathis rushed 182 times for 1,070 yards and 12 touchdowns. He had seven catches for 46 yards.
Sophomore linebacker Jaharan Griffin started at inside linebacker for Neshoba Central. He finished the season with 156 tackles, one interception and three fumble recoveries.
Head Coach Patrick Schoolar has been with the Rockets for four years. He has put together back-to-back 10-win seasons and has put the Rockets in the playoffs for both of those years. Schoolar coached in the Mississippi-Alabama all-star game.

Philadelphia High School
The Tornadoes had three players to make the MAC All-State First Team and three players to make the Second Team.
Senior quarterback Asher Morgan, who is headed to Samford to play college football, was named the first team quarterback. Morgan played in the Mississippi North-South all-star game this past weekend.
Kadarius Calloway, who also started at receiver, made the team as at defensive back. Lideatrick ‘Tulu' Griffin, who was injured part of the season, made it as a kick returner. Griffin has signed to play at Mississippi State University and played in the Mississippi-Alabama game.
Senior linebackers Breon Jordan and Trey Crockett were named to the First Team defense while place kicker Connor Long was named to the second team.
The Tornadoes also racked up several honors in the Class 6-2A all- region team.
Quarterback Asher Morgan was named the Most Valuable Back and Deoindre "The Bus" Fox was named the Most Valuable Defensive Player for his play on the Tornadoes' defensive front.
Those making All-Region first team were Lideatrick Griffin, Breon Jordan, Trey Crockett, Kadarius Calloway, Tanner Boler, Jatarian Hudson, Raedarius Triplet and Francisco Wilson Jr.
Those making All-Region second team were Zykileous Moore, Connor Long, Tekavian Bingham and Janaylon Dupree.
Coach David Frey and his coaching staff were named the all-region Coaching Staff of the Year.

Union High School
The Yellowjackets had two players to make the MAC All-State Second team.
They were offensive lineman Jacob Moore and free safety Kenyon Clay.
Moore and Clay both made All-Region first team, as did Dustin Welborn, Jamarkus Jones and Jaheim Gill.
Union players making All-Region second team were Colby Ferguson, Trent McDonald and Carlos Hickman.
Union coach Brad Breland was the head coach of the Mississippi team in the Mississippi-Alabama all-star game which won 17-16 in overtime.
