Leake’s baseball season comes to end

The Leake Academy baseball team saw its baseball season come to an end last week.

The Rebels were swept by East Rankin, falling 9-2 on Tuesday, 15-4 on Thursday and 8-2 on Friday.

Leake finished the season with a 10-16 record.

The Patriots used a big second inning and took a seven-run win over the Rebels on Tuesday to open the series.

East Rankin scored seven in the second inning while Leake answered with one in the top of the third. ERA then scored two in the third while Leake scratched one run in the seventh.

East Rankin outhit Leake 10-5 in the contest. Jake Freeny was 2-for-3 and scored a run while Bishop Hardin singled, scored and drove in a run. Rhett Atkinson and Kade Marble each singled.

Hardin started on the mound and pitched two innings, giving up seven runs, only one earned on five hits while striking out four. Bryce Watkins pitched three innings and gave up two runs on five hits and three walks whiles striking out two. Jack Harkins pitched the last inning and gave up just one walk.

It wasn’t a pleasant senior day for the Rebels as the Patriots took a five-inning, run-rule victory on Thursday.

East Rankin scored four in the first, five in the second, three in the third, one in the fourth and two in the fifth. Leake scored four in the bottom of the fifth.

Leake had just four hits as senior Gunter Scott was 2-for-3 with a double while senior Kade Marble singled and scored. Whitt Welch also singled while Bishop Hardin had two RBIs.

John Cross Beckham started and pitched one inning and gave up four runs on two hits and two walks. Aiden Watkins pitched 1 2/3 innings and gave up eight runs on seven hits while Matthew Nowell came in and got one out on five pitched. Brewer McLain and Gavin White each pitched an inning.

The Rebels dropped a six-run decision to the Patriots to end the regular season on Friday.

Each team scored one run in the first while East Rankin scored four in the third to go up 5-1. Each team scored a single run in the fourth while East Rankin scored two in the fifth.

Each team had five hits in the contest. Gunter Scott was 2-for-3 with a double while Rhett Atkinson singled and scored a run. Jake Freeny and Kade Marble each singled for the Rebels.

Atkinson started on the mound and gave up eight runs on five hits and seven walks while striking out five. Whitt Welch pitched two scoreless innings and struck out one.
