The Leake Academy Rebels kicked off the 2022 with a solid win over Winston Academy.

The Rebels got 331 yards of offense from Rhett Atkinson, built a 25-0 halftime lead and rolled to a 40-12 win over the Patriots. Leake moves to 1-0 on the season and will travel to Jackson Academy this week to take on the Patriots.

The Rebels came out strong in the first half with four scores.

Leake got the ball to start the game and went 58 yards in 12 plays as Riley Myers scored on a 7-yard run with 6:03 left in the first quarter. Matthew Nowell booted the PAT and Leake led 7-0.

After forcing a Winston punt, Leake went on the offensive again. This time, the Rebels used a 45-yard pass from Rhett Atkinson to Charlie Brantley to put the Rebels in scoring position. Two plays later, Atkinson scored on a 1-yard run with 37 seconds left in the first quarter. The PAT failed and Leake led 13-0.

Winston got to the Leake 29 on its next drive but a Jake Adams sack on third down forced a punt and put Leake at its own 13. Atkinson then ripped off a 51-yard run and capped off an 8-play drive with an 11-yard touchdown run with 6:04 left in the second quarter. The try for two failed and Leake led 19-0.

Winston again got deep in Leake territory but another third down sack by Adams and Jarod Sims stalled the drive. 

The Rebels went marching again and went 59 yards in seven plays as Atkinson hit Benjamin Jackson on a 14-yard touchdown pass with 42 seconds left in the first half. The PAT failed and Leake led 25-0 at the half. 

Winston got the ball to start the third quarter and drove into the Leake red zone but the Patriots fumbled into the end zone and Dylan Jones recovered for the Rebels. 

After Leake was forced to punt, the Patriots finally scored on a 1-yard run with 1:34 left in the third quarter. The PAT was failed and Leake led 25-6. 

After a failed onside attempt, Leake got the ball at midfield and went 52 yards in just two plays as Atkinson ripped off a 51-yard run with 37 seconds left in the third. Atkinson also ran in the two-point conversion and Leake led 33-6.

Winston struck back with a 35-yard touchdown pass with 11:55 left in the fourth to cut the score to 33-12.

After another failed onside attempt, Leake got the ball at midfield again. Leake appeared to score on a 46-yard pass from Atkinson to Myers but a penalty wiped out the scored. Four plays later, Leake turned the ball over on downs at the Winston 4. 

Leake got a second turnover when Myers recovered a fumbled pitch on an option attempt at the 30. Four plays later, Whitt Welch scored on an 8-yard run with 2:32 left in the game. Nowell booted the PAT for the final margin of 40-12.

Leake outgained Winston 407-256 in the contest. Leake had 290 yards rushing and 117 passing. Atkinson was 6-of-8 passing with one TD pass. Myers had two catches for 53 yards and Brantley had one for 45 yards. Atkinson led the rushing attack with 214 yards on 20 carries while Welch had 60 yards on 15 carries.

Bryce Watkins led the defense with 8.5 tackles while Jarod Sims had 6.5 tackles. Jake Brown had 5.5 tackles while Dylan Jones and Lucas Thomas had five tackles apiece.
