Leake Academy Rebels improve to 6-5 after picking up wins

The Leake Academy baseball team got above the .500 mark last week with a pair of wins.

The Rebels opened the week on Monday with an impressive 14-3 run-rule win over Newton County and then finished off the week with a 9-4 win over Winona Christian.

Leake Academy, now 5-4 on the season, returns to action this week as they will play a pair of games at East Central, taking on Kosciusko on Monday while playing East Webster Wednesday at 4 p.m. They will finish the week by traveling to Winona Christian Saturday in a 1 p.m. contest.

Newton County 3

The Rebels allowed only one hit and built an early lead as they took a run-rule win over the Cougars last Monday.

Leake scored four in the first and second to lead 8-0. Each team scored three in the fourth while Leake finished with three in the fifth to take the win.

Leake outhit Newton County 10-1 in the contest. Riley Myers was 3-for-3 with a double, home run, four runs scored and three RBIs. Gunter Scott was 2-for-3 with a double, four runs scored and two RBIs while Kade Marble was 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Bishop Hardin was 2-for-3 while Rope Lovern doubled and drove in three runs. 

Hardin also started on the mound for the Rebels and pitched all five innings, giving up three runs on one hit and five walks while striking out four.

Winona Christian 4

The Rebels overcome an early deficit and pulled away to take a five-run win over the Stars on Thursday.

Winona Christian scored three runs in the top of the first while Leake answered with two in the bottom of the first and second to take a 4-3 lead after two. Leake then added four in the third and one in the fifth to go up 9-3. WCS scored a run in the top of the seventh for the final margin.

Leake outhit Winona Christian 8-5 in the contest. Whitt Welch continued his hot hitting as the junior went 3-for-5 with a double, home run and two RBIs. Bishop Hardin was 2-for-3 with three runs scored and three RBIs. Gunter Scott, Brewer McLain and Aiden Watkins also had singles for Leake while Jake Freeny scored two runs and had two stolen bases.

Watkins started and pitched four innings to pick up the win, giving up three runs on four hits and five walks while striking out eight. John Cross Beckham pitched two innings and gave up one run on two hits while striking out three. Welch finished the game and pitched the last inning and gave up one hit and one walk while striking out one.
